Councils

At Return and Earn, we work with local councils across New South Wales to inspire communities to change their behaviour towards waste and recycling.

Reports

How many containers have been returned in your LGA?

Our Local Government Area (LGA) Network Volume Reports provide councils with important data on their residents participation in Return and Earn. These reports list the total volume and tonnage of drink containers returned for recycling through the return point network in your LGA every six months.

An annual LGA Network Volume Report is also published each December. This report lists the total volume and tonnage of drink containers returned through the return point network from December 2017, when the scheme began, to date.

Calculate your LGA’s impact

Every drink container recycled through Return and Earn helps to save water, energy and carbon emissions by reducing the need for raw materials in the production of new drink containers.

Calculate your community's impact using our LGA volume reports and celebrate the incredible impact your community's recycling is having.

How to get your community involved with Return and Earn

Encourage your community

By communicating the benefits of recycling through Return and Earn with your residents, you are helping to increase recycling and reduce litter and landfill in your community.

Host a return point

Many councils are making it easy for their community to Return and Earn by hosting return points in their area. Councils can enter into a commercial agreement with the network operator, TOMRA Cleanaway, to host a return point.

Share refunds

NSW local councils and material recovery facility (MRF) operators are required to put an agreement in place for the sharing of refunds for eligible drink containers that have been collected from yellow bins (household recycling bins).

Leading the way

Wollongong City Council are leading the way with the success of their bin basket litter reduction initiative for local parks and beaches.

As part of their Summer Cleansing Program to reduce litter and improve public place recycling, Wollongong City Council installed approximately 136 Return and Earn bin baskets in foreshores and parks from Stanwell Park to Windang.
