Recycling drink containers has become a way of life at Kearns Public School, thanks to the efforts of teacher Joanne Rice, whose work has been recognised at the NSW Environmental Education Awards
After noticing some recyclable containers were being put in regular garbage bins, Mrs Rice decided to set up a Return and Earn program at the western Sydney school in 2024.
Return and Earn bins were placed in every classroom and in the playground.
Students and staff were encouraged to participate, with regular reminders on the school’s Facebook page and weekly updates on the money raised from Return and Earn posted on the school noticeboard.
“We created and installed clear signage for bins in playgrounds, classrooms and the staffroom to support correct recycling,” Mrs Rice said.
“We collected bottles and cans at large school events, such as inter-sport gala days and whole school gatherings to ensure maximum participation.
“Fostering a culture of sustainability and responsibility has led to a noticeable increase in recycling rates, improved environmental awareness and has tangible fundraising results that benefit the school.”
Mrs Rice returns all the collected containers each Friday to the local Return and Earn Depot at Ingleburn.
“Money raised from the student collections is used to purchase new playground equipment, directly benefiting the students and enhancing their school experience,” she said.
“Funds from staff containers are allocated to staff well-being initiatives, including an end-of year celebration lunch to thank staff for their participation and support.”
Overall, approximately $1800 has been raised that has contributed to funding new resources for the students to play with at break times and the end-of year staff lunches.
Mrs Rice’s work was highly commended in the Return and Earn Program Leader category at the NSW Environmental Education Awards 2025.
“I’m so pleased our Return and Earn program has been embraced by the whole school community and made recycling a visible and valued part of everyday school life,” she said.
