The drive by Convoy for Kids Goulburn to support local children in need has been given a boost by Return and Earn drink container refunds.

Recognising the opportunity to add a fresh fundraising source, committee member Bruce ‘BJ’ Saunders started Convoy for Kids Goulburn’s Return and Earn campaign.

Since May 2025, the bottle and can refunds have added up to over $2,000.

“People can donate to us in that way if they like, with cans,” BJ said.

“My daughter Steph and I started collecting cans from all the different places we have arranged to collect from, and I just take the containers to the machine and feed them in.”

The community can drop off containers at the two main Convoy for Kids collection points to contribute to the fundraising.

“We have a collection point at Lee & Thomas Auto Electricians and Rocky Hill Recycled Sand and Soil,” BJ explained.

“A lot of people drop off for us. We’ve got a big recycling bag and that gets filled. People just come and pour them in.”

Customers at regular Convoy for Kids fundraising barbeques are encouraged to put their empty drink cans in a bin for the Return and Earn fundraiser.

BJ also collects containers from members of the wider community who are keen to contribute, including the Chubby Cat Café at Tarago.

“They all save up their cans and bottles for me and once a fortnight I’ll go and pick them up,” he said.

The Convey’s goal is to provide support for local children with cancer, terminal illness and permanent disability by providing financial assistance.

The charity began in 1999, and over that time has raised nearly a million dollars.

An annual truck convoy and carnival day, held each year in November, is the main fundraising activity.

“It’s a big community effort,” BJ said.

“It is all to support the local kids who are doing it tough and help the families struggling to meet the basic medical needs for their children.”
